![]() The
infamous STF 7- series marked another decline in quality; it’s possible they were no longer a product of Kopelman’s New York Omegatape/Alphatape company. To save tape
costs, each reel was shortened by
leaving out tracks. Cheap packaging, sloppy labelling, no notes,
substandard dubbing. All of these characteristics were carried over
when these same titles later recirculated on reels from
Hallmark / Sentry / Turnpike / Coast / Empire: all shared similar
package
designs. Only the label name would change to protect the guilty. As time went on packaging became even cheaper, with generic designs to save on printing costs, even when the boxes displayed the wrong catalog number. The STF 7-xxx titles were also available as MTF (in the midst of the stereo boom! - an ‘innovation’ that apprently began during Kopelman’s administration), and/or as STF3-xxx releases: recorded at 3.75 ips instead of 7.5, for the ultimate in lousy sound. At least some of the mono 3.75 ips releases were issued in the increasingly obsolete 2-track format; 5-inch reels were used in standard 7-inch boxes. |

A
classic of confusion. The front promises music from Oklahoma, South
Pacific, and other then-recent Broadway shows. The back
lists songs from none of those productions! The latter proved
to be correct; the unnamed soloist was Norman Brooks

| Stereo Dance Time George Voumard Trio 3HT-20003 PLAY |
When
David Hubert left Omega the tape operation moved from
Hollywood to New York. The new management, with Manny Kopelman as one of the execs, called their company
Alphatapes, which was an imprint from the
earliest years
of Omega's existence. These new 60-minute Alphatapes sometimes still said Omegatape on the
label
(when
they bothered to include one). Despite the 3HT prefix used in catalog listings (the tapes themselves usually used 7NT) these were 7.5
ips tapes, but they were also available in allternate STF
3- versions (3.75 ips speed).Danse Cette Ville / Complainte de Mackie / I'll Never Smile Again / Cielito Lindo / Sur Deux Notes / Why Do I Love You? / I'm Always Chasing Rainbows / Chant Idien / Ce Cesait Dommage / Love in Portofino / Per un Bacio d'Amor / I Could Have Danced All Night / Nessuno / Perfidia / Marie Marie / Pimpollo / Ne Joue Pas / 'S Wonderful / Arrivederci / Qu'il Fait Bon Vivre |

| The Mighty Wurlitzer Pipe
Organ Bill Thomson / Gordon Kibbee 3HT-20006 PLAY PLAY |
A
rather jumbled back cover seems to claim all the selections are from
either Oklahoma or South Pacific, then goes on to contradict itself in
the two paragraphs of text which also describe music of Victor
Herbert. No indication as to which organist plays what. In fact, the
contents are drawn from a multitude of souces, yet they don't manage to
incude the complete contents of Oklahoma!, South Pacific, or Victor
Herbert!Oh! What a Beautiful Morning / Surrey with the Fringe on Top / All 'er Nothin' / Kansas City / People Will Say We're in Love / C'est si Bon / Vienna, City of My Dreams / Granada / Bahia / Tea for Two / Indian Summer / South Pacific Overture / Dites Moi / Bali Ha'i / I Could Have Danced All Night / I've Grown Accustomed to her Face / The Boy Next Door / Kiss Me Again / Rose of the World / Toyland |
| The Mighty Wurlitzer Pipe
Organ Bill Thomson / Gordon Kibbee STF3-20006 |
This
is ostensibly the 3.75 ips version of the above, but (if the box
listings are to be believed) it turns out to have a different mix of
music! Gone are the South Pacific and Oklahoma songs, replaced with
more Victor Herbert and various old chestnuts, the latter actually
played by John
Kiley.Yesterthoughts / Indian Summer / March of the Toys / Pan Americana / Poor Johnny One Note / Where or When / Wish You Were Here / If This Isn't Love / My Funny Valentine / Roamin' in the Gloamin' / Dark Eyes / At Dawning / Oh Promise Me / Tell Me Pretty Maiden / Mighty Lak a Rose / Rose of the World / Toyland / Gypsy Love Song / Kiss Me Again |

| Music from the Four Corners
of the World 3HT-20008 |
Contrary to the listings on the box, the "Honolulu Pops Orchestra", the "Sinfonica Populare de Barcelona", and the "Paris Pops Orchestra", if they existed at all, did not make these recordings. They were all produced in Germany with a 50-piece orchestra under the direction of Heino Reese and licensed from a Hamburg music production company. (Some of the Hawaiian selections also turn up on OSL 61--and on many other budget releases.) Similarly, the "Budapest Radio Orchestra" did not perform the Hungarian tracks; they too were licensed from the same Hamburg source and conducted by Walter Jurgens (Hans Jurgens-Walther). No actual Omega recordings were used in the production of this tape, only material licensed from Hamburg probably scrounged from the catalogs of Coronet, Spin-O-Rama, etc.Sweet Leilane / Dark Dawn / Moon of Manakoora / Drowsy Water / Maori's Farewell / Romany Life / Stradivarious / Ziguener Weisen / Czardas / Jehre Kati / I Love Paris / Musetta's Waltz / Can-Can / Allez Vous En / Clair de Lune / Granada / Estudiantina / Viva Navarra / Estrellito / Serenata Espagnole |
